2002 PSBA Hall of Fame Inductees

JOHN R. "JACK" AVERILL

DuBois, Pennsylvania

Jack R. Averill entered the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association Hall of Fame for his meritorious service to the game of bowling.

Jack began attending conventions as a delegate in the early 70's and was elected as an Area Director in 1977. After being elected 4th Vice President in 1983, he progressed through the chairs and became PSBA President in 1987-1988.

During his tenure as PSBA President, Jack initiated the President's Challenge to stimulate greater interest in the Annual Tournament. He also started an Area Director's grading system so that each caucus would be aware of the kind of job their Directors were doing. Jack has served on every committee of the PSBA. He has been very active in his local Association (Allegheny Mountain) having been the Association Treasurer for 35 years, and is presently in his 6th year as Executive Director. He has served as local chairman for 2 PSBA Senior Tournaments and 2 PSBA Mixed Tournaments. On several occasions, Jack has been the guest speaker for bowling course students at the Penn State University, DuBois Campus.

He is a life member of the Allegheny Mountain B.A., a member of the Allegheny Mountain B.A. Hall of Fame and has twice been AMBA 'S "Man of the Year". He has bowled in 25 PSBA State Tournaments and 16 ABC National Tournaments. He is currently bowling in 2 leagues.

Jack's concern is always for what is best for the bowler. His boundless energy and exuberance on behalf of bowling are an integral part of his character.

 

STEVE L GEHRINGER

 Reading, Pennsylvania

Steve L. Gehringer enters the Pennsylvania State Bowling Association Hall of Fame this evening for his contributions to the game of bowling.

Steve has bowled 21 PSBA Tournaments, 21 ABC Tournaments. He has over 1000-700’s, 50-300’s and 31-800’s to his credit in 31 years of organized bowling.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place finish in the ABC National Tournament, 1st place Team in 1992 Corpus Christi, 2nd place Doubles and 3rd place All Events in Reno in 1995. He has been on the winning PSBA State Championship Team 6 times (Most in PSBA History), 13 local association titles (Most in Readings Association History), 3 times has bowled back to back 300 games. Steve has 10 Dutchman Titles, 10 time Major League Champion, 4 time Eastern Pennsylvania Bowlers Association Champion, Eastern Pennsylvania Association Bowler of the Year 1981, 1st Team in 1982 & 1983, 2nd Team in 1983 & 1984 in the All Star Dutch Classic Bowlers Association. He is a 14 time finalist in the Brunswick World Team Challenge Tournament, has 92 consecutive 600's in the Laurel Lanes Major League. Steve is in the top 10 of all time 300's and 800's bowled. With all this to his credit he takes time to raise money and help with the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Event. Steve's accomplishments go on and on, he is one fine credit to our sport.
